What are tokens and why are they important?

Tokens are access keys generated by Facebook that allow not just analytics to communicate with your Instagram profile.

Thanks to tokens, NJL can update and monitor key data, such as:

✅ new posts and stories you publish

✅ follower growth

✅ interaction and reach stats

📌 Note: tokens have an expiration date.

When a token expires, the link between your profile and NJL is interrupted, and Meta stops sending us its data. This means some features—like story tracking or new followers—will no longer be available, and it will no longer be possible to retrieve historical data for the period when the token was expired.

To avoid any gaps in data tracking, it’s crucial to update your tokens before they expire.

Let’s see how to refresh or reactivate a token!

1️⃣ Checking token status

Not Just Analytics warns you when a token is about to expire in two ways.

• Email alert: you’ll receive a notification in your inbox
• Message in the platform: you’ll see a notice in the ‘Your profiles’ section

2️⃣ Updating the token

If your token is about to expire, you can renew it in just a few steps:

1. log in to Not Just Analytics and go to the ‘Your profiles’ section
2. click ‘Update token’ next to the relevant profile
3. in the following screen, click ’Log in with Facebook’
4. the token is updated automatically, keeping your profile connected

3️⃣ Reactivating an expired token

If the token has already expired, the profile’s business data will show as disconnected and will no longer be updated.

To reactivate it:

1. go to the ‘Your profiles’ section
2. find the disconnected profile
3. click the pink button ’Connect’ next to that profile
4. follow the facebook connection procedure to restore the token and reactivate business data

📌 Note: once expired, NJL cannot recover any lost data from the downtime. However, reactivating the token allows you to resume tracking without further interruptions.
